HOMEMADE SHOJI SCREENS

When this house was built, everybody wanted to have the western style house as it is thought that western style is better in such cold area. Japanese traditional house is divided the rooms by shoji screen or fusuma sliding door which is not suitable to keep the room temperature. However I recently wish traditional life style in my house.

Change the floor of my room to tatami floor from wooden floor is one of my wishes. Also I replaced the curtains with shoji screens for full wide glass sliding doors facing to the back yard to catch full sunshine. Sliding doors such as usual shoji, you can open only a half. Therefore I made suspended according type screen to open fully.

Traditional shoji is made of well dried Japanese cedar with no knot nor cross grin material. However I used usual 1x4 and 2x2 with knots, cracks, bent and cross grain. I cut these boards to thin frames and assembled.

shoji

Accordion type, suspended shoji screen. You can open fully to enjoy full sunshine.

This is the sun room to take in the maximum sun light. Originally all the windows are covered by curtains. I replaced them all with shoji sliding doors. I like very much this change.

I installed the rails to slide shoji doors.

Opened shoji doors. Shoji on the right side is lift up open system.

Cutting 1x4 into thin strips to make grid frame where the paper is glued.

The strips are jointed to the outer frame.

I replaced also the window curtain with shoji in the bedroom. ( no photo is shown)

I changed the interior door of entrance of my room. Original door was cheep looking, and I made a new door when the room was reformed.

fusuma

Small items, for instance, the shade of ceiling light is changed to Japanese taste. Such small change makes grate change of total impression of the room.

kitchen

My house is very old, but abouto 20 years ago, the kitchen was reformed., ie, we replased the old system witu modern "System Kithen" All the doors of cabinets, drawers, shelves doors looked very dirty and poor. I wanted the new ones, but kitchen itself is still good to use, therefore I changed these doors with new ones.

Above is image of previous kitchen. I should take photos, but I forgot. Therefore this picture is only the image which I processed.

All the dirty old doors are replaced with new wood grain panels. These paneld are not the print, but natural wood grain. I found this plywood in the DIY shop at very cheep price. I finished by oil clear varnish. It looks nice, and I am much satisfied.
