木工 自作 工作 手作り

MISCELLANEOUS

Here I live in the north country, therefore fire wood is available at any time. I found today while usual working, good sized logs are sold. They are for mushroom planting, the shop clerk says. Size is: 1m length and approx. 150mm in diameter. Price is \400 a piece. Of course, I got one.

Species is Japanese Alder, which is used for furniture or musical instrument etc. However this log is green wood, and needs to be dried. It would take to dry for about 1 year in form of rough board. It was while working, I shouldered it to my home for 10min. I put it in the storage house. I will make it boards by band saw. If it is too hard, by hand saw some day.

I have a lot of branches and 300mm diameter log which someone gave me. I am thinking that I have to make another plan to build some stuff using these material.

I made such stuff. An awl (ice pick size) to mark the points of wood screw or drilling on the material. I turned to make the handle. Other parts are of small brass pipe, old screw driver. I used

Another is a marking knife. This is much better than pencil when you need accuracy in marking. I used hand made marking knife, but this new one is made to look good. Handle is not round rod but rectangle with round corners. I like better this shape to hold the handle to fit in my hand when using. The knife itself is made from the carbon steel folding table leg. This material is very nice to make various cutlery.

Such small work is good to refresh me.

I made an amp case using the board which I took out when reforming the room. I wanted to plane and finish by lacquering, but this material is too bad to plane. My skill and my plane is also poor, I know. Anyway, I made "Yakiita", Japanese traditional technique, i.e. burning the surface of the board, rubbed with the wire brush , polished and sprayed clear lacquer. It looks good.

And I also made the dial knobs of volume etc. by turning the wood pieces. Main SW lever is also made of wood piece.

Now the amp case is completed but amp itself is not yet. So far some electronic components are needed but they are not available here. Therefore I will purchase on net together with some other items as freight and other cost is too expensive for the residents in Hokkaido. Making the amp case is the main purpose and amp itself is not in a hurry.

Today, 2017 March 11, while taking a work, I found a deer skull in the river. Live deer is often seen here, but I saw the skull for the first time. I tried to take picture, but the it was difficult to take good pictures because of heavy snow. You see some white dots on the picture.

It seems a young deer as its antlers are not yet big.

I wanted to get the antlers but water should be too cold, stream is high and water depth looks around 1 meter, therefore, I gave up.

There are many wild animals such us fox, which steal dog meals, many kinds of the bird such as swan etc.

I made a wooden square and mallet using hard wood pieces bought on net. Such small items are usefull. I have another mallet, rubber hammer etc. but I needed small size mallet. This wooden square is also more useful than metal one, which I have, for usual wood working.

deer skull

Today, March 19, I found the deer skull which I found the other day while working. It has not drifted away. Anyway I at once decided to get it. I bought the rubber boots and plastic bag, and picked up the skull in the river.

I shouldered to home as while walking. I don't know why it was there for more than 1 week, but nobody was interested in. Anyway they seldom walk there. And the antlers worked like the anchor, I suppose.

In my childhood I played in the river. I enjoyed the same.

grip mallet

The other day I made a mallet, but today I made another mallet to easier. The new mallet is only the head without handle. (I don't know if I can call it "mallet"). Material is a piece of branch which I got while working. Diameter is around 60mm. I cut it in 100mm length, barked and polished. So far I m using it conveniently.

It fits my hand neatly. Such staff should be made to fit user's hand, I think.

head camera mount

The movie is the good way to show how to work, how to build etc. I tried to use movie but it is too bad for working as I cannot concentrate on working while taking video.

I made a head camera mount shown below. My camera is light small camera, so it can be set this mount to cover my own eye sight.

Therefore from now on I will take the movie to upload on YouTube as well as the edited material at hand. First, I tried to upload on YouTube and to show in my site. Home Made Scroll Saw 2
