Various tools and machines are all for amateur use bought at the DIY shop, recycle shop and flea market (in Japan, it is sometimes understood "free" market) etc. and I made some. Of course I know that the high quality tool makes high quality article, but with high quality skill. I am an amateur craftsman, actually a toddler woodworker. Therefore I know well it is impossible for me to use well the professional high quality tools. Also I cannot maintain the tools well. Moreover needless to say, I make the articles for fun and my own use, not to sell. Recent amateur use tools available in DIY shops are improved much now. Hand saw, for instance, cuts very well and cheep. As I can hardly sharpen the saw blade, replaceable blade is a big advantage. Hand planes are recently available with replaceable blade structure. I wish to get excellent skill, but I have no time to learn for it. Therefore I make effort how I can gloss over finish. I never hesitate to cut corners. The most important is practical use, and if possible better appearance. I saw some time ago in some department store, a skillful craftsman demonstrated to make a Japanese style cabinet. However I saw he uses the tools same as amateur use ones. I asked him if he uses such tools usually. He smiled and said "These tools are disposable as it is impossible to maintain sufficiently in such place". I understood, but I saw his work excellent. I understood also it is because of his skill. I decided later I would get skill to gloss over(!!) It is waste of time and passion to lean for perfect craftsman skill. I should spend time and passion for fun, I decided. By the way, I have a china quality bench lathe for long time. I cannot expect any kind of accuracy of the articles. Therefore I started to build my own metal lathe, but now it is suspended on half way. I will finish as soon as possible, I desire. There some people who build by themselves excellent metal lathes. I will introduce my beautiful self made bench late some day, I wish. Article Index return to home |
