HOMMADE BANDSAW

The band saw is the machine which I thought that I have to obtain first of all. Once about 20 years ago, I bought a tiny band saw, which you can lift up by a hand, cutting depth is 150mm max. and height is 100mm. Blade useable is too thin and cut frequently. Tremendous high blade cost made me crazy.

Anyway this machine was adequate for tiny works, but could nothing to make the articles I wish to make now. Therefore I checked the band saw on the web site, but in vain. The machines I need are too expensive considering my frequency of use. I checked overseas market and found such sized machines cost around a half of Japanese ones, but freight, charges, aftercare etc. were too hard.

I was quite surprised to know you can build your own machine by yourself. I had no idea that you can make such staff in your shop. Of course I at once made up my mind to build the machine in my shop.

First machine was far from satisfaction. It run but the blade came off every 5 minutes because of terrible vibration, misalignment. I repeated cut and try, eventually made a new machine to try again and again. At that time I had only hand tools, drill press, circular saw, China quality lathe etc.

Finally I succeeded to get useable machine which I made using above Incomplete band saw.

The band saw in my shop is :

Cutting depth 350mm
Cutting hight 200mm
Motor 400W 3Ph 200v induction type
Power 100v single phase inverted to above

Motor was least expensive but the inverter unit was expensive. However this unit can be used for other machines, more over variable speed function is needed for this machine. I believe it was a good choise.

My band saw at present is as follows.

Main structure is made of soft steel angle, which is assembled by bolts. The shaft bearings are mounted on the frame, not on the wheels. I could not install them on the wheels taking perfect alignment. Maybe it is because of that I have no skill.

Motor: 400w induction type 200v 3Ph

Inverter unit. I have to invert 100v single phase to power above motor. This inverter will be used for other machines such as self made lathe etc. some day. If necessary, I will make remote controller to put on the band saw to move this inverter to use in common.

I wished to show more detailed building process but unfortunately I have not left the photos. I want, if possible, I will detailed records by photos and movie when I make another unit.

I deceded to build a new band saw to show here all the building process. It was the reason why I started this site that I wished to say you can build even such machine by yourself to the Japanese woodworkers. Many people overseas do this and enjoy woodworking life. I wish Japanenese peopile share this joy. Please crick BUILDING BANDSAW
